Wedding speech order: who speaks first, and for how long

The order depends on which side of the Atlantic you marry on. Here is the running order in each tradition, the timing, and opening lines your speakers can borrow.

Updated October 20, 2026

American receptions usually hear from the parents, the maid of honor and the best man. British weddings keep to the father of the bride, the groom and the best man. Irish weddings add the father of the groom and often get the speeches done before anyone eats. Start from your tradition, then change whatever doesn't fit your families.

United States: parents, then the wedding party, then you

The Knot's version follows who hosts. The bride's parents are traditionally the hosts, so they speak first, usually the father of the bride welcoming everyone. The groom's parents come next. Old etiquette gave their toast to the rehearsal dinner, which they traditionally hosted, and some couples still do it that way.

Then the honor attendants: the maid of honor, followed by the best man, though plenty of couples swap them. Many couples close the speeches themselves with a short thank-you, which also tells the room that the dancing is next.

On timing, a planner quoted by The Knot suggests starting about three-quarters of the way through dinner. Guests are still seated and nearly finished, so by the time the speeches end the tables can be cleared and the dancing can start. A long list of speakers is a good reason to move some of them to the rehearsal dinner.

United Kingdom: father of the bride, groom, best man

Debrett's sets out the classic sequence and what each speaker covers:

  1. Father of the bride (or whoever takes the role): thanks the guests and everyone who organized the day, says something affectionate about the bride, welcomes the groom into the family and proposes a toast to the bride and groom.
  2. The groom: thanks the father of the bride on behalf of himself and his wife. Debrett's notes that the first mention of "wife" is always a popular moment. He then thanks the guests, both sets of parents and the best man. The toast to the bridesmaids is traditional but becoming less common.
  3. Best man: reads messages from people who couldn't come, tells the story of the groom and their friendship, toasts the couple and announces the cake cutting.

If a maid of honour speaks too, Bridebook places her after the best man. If the bride speaks, putting her straight after the groom keeps the couple's thanks together.

Debrett's is firm that speeches belong after the meal, when guests are fed and relaxed. Some couples book a toastmaster to introduce each speaker and keep the day on time. Those who do spend £514 on average, according to Bridebook's 2026 report, so add it to your cost estimate if you want one.

Ireland: two fathers and speeches before dinner

At an Irish wedding, the hotel's banqueting manager or the best man usually acts as MC and introduces the father of the bride, who welcomes everyone and the groom's family. The father of the groom replies with a few words and welcomes the bride into his family. The groom thanks the guests for coming and for their gifts, thanks both fathers and the hotel staff, and toasts the bridesmaids. It is customary to present flowers to both mothers at this point. The best man closes.

Timing is where Ireland differs most. In the weddingsonline survey of January 2025, 44% of couples had speeches before the meal, 23% during it and 25% after, while 8% had none. Speaking first lets nervous speakers enjoy their dinner. Tell the venue a few days ahead so the kitchen can plan around it.

Irish guests often run a book on how long the best man will talk, or sometimes pass round a pint glass of money every time a speaker says "thank you". Speakers, you have been warned.

How long each speech should be

SpeechSuggested lengthSource
Best man (UK)No more than 5 minutesDebrett's
Any speech (UK)5 to 7 minutesBridebook
Any speech (US)3 to 5 minutesPlanners quoted by The Knot
All speeches together (Ireland)25 to 40 minutesweddingsonline

Do the sum before the day. Four speakers at five minutes each, plus handovers, already takes 25 minutes. Give each speaker a time limit when you ask them, and ask them to read the speech aloud with a timer at least once.

When the traditional order doesn't fit

The old orders assume a bride, a groom and a father who pays. Let the order follow your families instead.

Whatever you choose, run the order from formal to funny. The thank-yous and toasts land better early, and the best stories make a better finish.

Opening lines your speakers can borrow

Example names, adjust to taste:

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Margaret and myself, thank you for being here. I'll keep this short, because I'm told the best man has been rehearsing.

Father Brennan, ladies and gentlemen, you are all very welcome to Aoife and Cian's wedding.

My wife and I... (pause for the cheer) would like to thank David for those kind words, and for trusting me with his daughter.

Hi everyone, I'm Jess, Emma's sister and maid of honor. I've known her for 29 years, so I have stories. I picked the two she'll forgive me for.

For anyone who doesn't know me, I'm Tom. Dan and I met at school when we were eleven. I've been asked to keep this under five minutes, so I'll start with the ending: Dan, you married well.

Put the order in writing

Send the running order to every speaker, the venue and the DJ, band or toastmaster, with names spelled the way they are said. Tell each speaker who comes before them and who comes after, so nobody stands up early or hands the microphone to the wrong person.

Ask your speakers a few months out, when you finalize the menu and draft the day's timeline; the wedding checklist dates both of those tasks for your wedding. On the day, Wedding Harmony keeps the running order in your day-of timeline (a Premium feature, one-time purchase), so you and your partner see the same plan.
